Supporting Gender Diverse Youth with Medical Conditions

A workshop session by Tandy Aye MD and Christine Brady PhD

This session will present considerations for providing care to gender diverse youth with co-occurring medical conditions (e.g., POTS, chronic headaches, PANS, FND). We will share the current research on the rates of medical conditions in the gender diverse community and areas of future research. Potential impact of medical conditions on identity development and how this relates to gender will be explored. Case examples will be shared to facilitate discussion around psychosocial, identity, and medical considerations. Intersectionality will be highlighted throughout this presentation. Will we focus on improving culturally sensitive care with this population and how providers can address barriers to care. Participants attending this session will gain confidence assessing readiness for youth with gender dysphoria and co-occurring medical conditions, addressing concerns/questions families may have regarding medical treatment, and facilitating family acceptance.
