Seeking Gender Congruence Through Surgery

For many young people, the idea of changing their body to more fully represent their internal sense of self is a critical part of achieving gender congruence. The assumption is that modifying their bodies will address any and all aspects of dysphoria they may be experiencing. For the adults in their lives however, the prospect of pursuing gender congruence through an affirming surgical procedure can be fraught with uncertainty and fear. Even the most affirming of caregivers are challenged by the idea of their child undergoing gender affirmation surgery. What role can providers working with youth and families play in navigating these difficult questions? What factors should be considered when coming to a decision about pursuing surgical congruence measures? How does one support a young person to have realistic expectations? What does it look like to help the caring adults understand why such a path is so critical for that young person's sense of self? Come listen to a panel of experience surgical providers discuss how they have worked with youth and caregivers to think about these and many other important questions.
